Now one of Mexico’s world champions will return to the United Kingdom, where he has already won twice, to make his first World Cup defense against the Irishman Michael Conlan .
Lopez, with a 27-2-0 record, won a war against Warrington that made noise in the featherweight division, after picking up three knockout victories in his previous outings. His opponent is once again of a high caliber: Conlan was a 2012 Olympic medalist representing Ireland and will fight in his hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The European has a professional record of 18-1-0, with a lone loss to Leigh Wood by knockout in March 2022, in the fight that Ring Magazine chose as the best of 2022. Conlan was the interim world champion, but lost to Wood in the attempt to conquer the complete crown. After that he bounced back with wins over Miguel Marriaga and Karim Guerfi in Belfast.
“This is a huge opportunity, fighting in Belfast for the world t**le is something I have always dreamed of and I will take this opportunity with both hands ,” Conlan said.
“I’m a traveling warrior. Traveling to my opponent’s country doesn’t affect me ,” Lopez said. To which he added: “I won my t**le in Leeds and now I will defend it in Belfast. The more they shout for Michael, the stronger I am going to fight . “
